Goji Berries on Gardeners World... 30/05/08

As I watched Gardeners world last night, I was saddened to see that the Goji Berry Plants imported from China were being dug up and put in the bin...(household waste,  NOT COMPOST). After a bit of investigative research it seems that this is the official line from DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). They state,

' Goji berries (Lycium barbarum) are a so-called ‘superfood’, traditionally grown in the Far East, particularly China.  Goji plants (not the berries themselves, or seeds) are prohibited from being imported to the EU from most third countries, because they belong to the solanaceous family, which means they are susceptible to certain quarantine pests and diseases which can affect crops such as potato and tomato.'

It seems that any risk to commercial crops is 'relativley low' however we must all endeavour to protect Britains wildlife and crops. Therefore, 'Creative Nature' recommend not buying Goji Berry Plants.

If you want Goji Berries DO NOT BUY THE PLANTS, buy the berries themselves, direct from a reputable supplier like ourselves. Fore more information please see 'Creative News'
